September 8, 2005 - Today Microsoft officially announced its pricing plans for the next generation of Xbox Live. Generally, the cost of Xbox Live will remain constant, only now gamers have a slew of new options concerning what type of membership they want and how long it will last.
As we've previously reported Xbox Live has been divided into Silver and Gold Memberships. The Silver Package is free and allows players to edit a gamer profile and an Xbox Live gamertag. Silver members are able to send and receive text and voice messages and have access to Xbox Live Marketplace where free and priced gaming content is available for download. Silver Membership does not include access to the online multiplayer experience, matchmaking, feedback, or Marketplace exclusives that may be offered to Gold members.
Gold Memberships will be offered both through the Xbox Live Dashboard (which will require a credit card) and over the counter at retailers. The retail version doesn't require the use of a credit card, making Xbox Live available to nearly anyone with a fistful of cash. Below is the pricing tree for the different memberships.
One Month Gold Membership
A basic trial offering that includes multiplayer experiences, matchmaking, feedback, and privileges in Marketplace. This membership package is not available at retail outlets.
Price over Xbox Live Dashboard (credit card necessary)
$7.99 (U.S.)
$8.99 (CDN)
Three Month Gold Membership
Includes all previously mentioned gold level features, Joust for Xbox Live arcade, an Xbox 360 headset, a ten dollar mail-in rebate coupon good for any Xbox 360 title, and 100 Microsoft Points for use on Live Marketplace.
Retail Price
$39.99 (U.S.)
Price over Xbox Live Dashboard (credit card necessary)
$19.99 (U.S.)
$24.99 (CDN)
Twelve Month Gold Membership
Includes all previously mentioned gold level features, Bankshot Billiards for Xbox Live arcade, an Xbox 360 headset, a twenty dollar mail-in rebate coupon good for any Xbox 360 title, and 200 Microsoft Points for use on Live Marketplace.
Price over Xbox Live Dashboard (credit card necessary)
$49.99 (U.S.)
$59.99 (CDN)
Retail Price
$69.99 (U.S.)
Microsoft said the offerings will be available this holiday season, which most likely means that the new packages will debut concurrently with the launch of Xbox 360. Xbox Live originally debuted at the same retail price and now has a user base of two million members. We'll let you know when the new memberships will hit retail outlets as more information becomes available.
